In the EU most goods are charged with VAT in the country in which they are purchased. However, for a new vehicle that falls within the definition of a new means of transport, VAT will be due in the country that the vehicle is being exported to. In some countries local duties may also be payable, and it is advised that you check with your local office first.
A new means of motorised transport is not new when more than 6 months have elapsed since its first date of entry, or it has travelled for more than 6,000 kilometres.
Date of entry refers to when it was first registered for road use in the country of manufacture or the first date that is liable for road use there.
VAT may not be payable when you are a diplomat or a member of an officially recognised International Organisation or a member of NATO or the civilian staff accompanying them.
NATO forces and civilian staff must produce evidence that the host member state has relieved tax. Diplomats must produce evidence of tax free status from your head of mission and confirmation that your host member state has granted you relief or your new means of transport.
US Military and British Forces Germany may satisfy tax free status, subject to confirmation. Those of you wishing to purchase a new vehicle for export to a foreign country are eligible for VAT exemption but liable for duties, for new motor vehicle requirements of a particular country.
